Non profit organizations of all sizes know that building and maintaining an effective brand will help build name recognition and take fundraising to a new level. Poor graphic design standards can make a NPO come across as disorganized or sloppy.
The challenge for non profits is that most, particularly the smaller ones, have limited funding. This makes perfect sense, because the more money you can devote you organization’s mission, the more you can achieve.
Working with an experienced non-profit graphic designer could be your solution! While a tight budget might give you certain restrictions, a creative graphic designer will rise to the challenge and work within your means. Design work isn’t about the money that is spent, it is about how you can take something common and make it into something extraordinary.
Challenges for Non-profits
Working with a wide variety of non-profits, there are two scenarios that I see play out time and time again. Here are some common pitfalls of trying to find a good non-profit graphic designer on a budget.
1.) The Pro-Bono Designer
There are many design organizations and graphic designers who offer pro-bono graphic design. This is a really great way to get stellar design for the best price: FREE. While this may seem like the best option, problems can arise. The issue that is relayed to me time and time again is “I didn’t feel like my job was a priority.” Pro-bono designers have the best intentions, but when push comes to shove, paying clients get top priority (we all need to eat, right?). As a result, pro-bono projects tend to take longer, get pushed to the back burner and deadlines are missed.
2.) The Full Priced Designer
I will be the first person to say that good design is worth the money. Sooner or later, non-profits have to deal with one big issue: the bottom line. We know that the more money your are able to put toward your cause, the more lives you can change. That is why working with a designer who knows how to work on a budget can help you deliver your message while keeping your treasurer or accountant happy.
At Lucky Lindy, we split the difference. We charge reduced rates for non-profits. That way, we still get to eat and you still get a professional designer who is there for you when you need them. We are always available to offer our advice free of charge, what you choose to do with it is up to you!
